Strings look so much more professional and worth the money. I don't think the dolls are worth what you pay if you get plastic! I don't want to have to pay $10 to send a new doll back to get strings, either. Does Jess come with a plastic or string tie? Elizabeth? Nellie? Whatever happened to the "good" quality AG used to have?!

It really is a small differance. I have both and it's really not a big deal.

Plastic ties DO keep the head on better than strings.

Also with the clothes getting lower and lower in the back, like Jess's halter top, the strings are showing more, which bothers some people.

I think only dolls that go to the doll hospital get the strings.

Personally, I like the plastic...I always found the strings to be incredibly annoying.

Please Please do not quote me, but I beleive that I read somewhere, (and boy have I done some reading) that if a doll has strings, and you send her to the hospital, you must request the strings be left in. I dont know alot, and I am such a beginner, that I could be totally wrong, but for some reason that has stuck in my head. The only thing that I can see the strings being replace with the plastic tie, is for ease of the repair!?!?! Myself, I prefer the strings. And if I ever had to have a repair, would very much so want them left in also. What doll do you have that has plastic? Did it come from E-bay, or did it go to the hospital ?

She's right, I just got my 1994 Pre-Mattel Samantha from the hospital and they messed up they completely ignored my instructions and replaced her body! With a cheaper one that has plastic neck ties! There was nothing wrong with the doll's original body! She was only supposed to have her limbs tightened. Now I have to send Samantha back to have her old body/strings put back on. When I asked AG Hospital why they did this, all they could tell me is that they don't throw away the old bodies and that they were "sorry". (Everyone knows the PM dolls have softer plush cloth bodies, they were probably hoping I would be too dumb to tell the difference) What would Pleasant T. Rowland say if she knew how Mattel is taking shortcuts, being incompetent and cheapening the quality of her products?

I also got very frustrated when I left specific instructions in a note and they didn't seem to have read it. They replaced my string with a neck tie even after I specifically requested them to leave the string. I was told that they no longer have strings available....but was there something wrong with the string that was already there? They also replaced her limbs and I had to send her back to get the old limbs back (she's a 1st edition Addy), again there was no contact for this. I think the hospital is great, but they really do need to develop a form of communication. When I asked if I could talk to the hospital when my Addy got back they pretty much said no, that they have no way to communicate with me. Now that doesn't sound good, especially since they don't seem to be reading the notes we leave with them.
Thanks for letting me vent a tad.

I've had two experiences with the doll hospital, and both have been positive.
First, I sent an older Molly in to have her limbs replaced. She had been an Ebay bargain, and had fingers chewed off. Someone called me, not from the hospital, but from AG. They said the hospital has no way of contacting customers, or talking to them direct, so all messages are relayed through a representative. They wanted my "permission" to also replace the dolls head, since they no longer had the same shade of limbs available to match the existing head. Their concern was that this doll belonged to a child who might get upset by not getting her original Molly returned. I assured them this was not the case, and to go ahead and replace the head. They sent back a brand new doll.
My second experience was with Lindsey, also purchased on Ebay. The seller sent her wrapped in dark colored tissue paper, and the color came off on her face. I tried to remove it, and it wouldn't budge. The seller sent me the money to have the head replaced, and when I sent her to the hospital, I put a large note, attached with a rubberband around her torso, asking that they replace the head, using the string, and to please return the old head to me. I also wrote this on the admission slip. They did just as I asked.

I have sent three dolls with notes to leave the neck strings. One isn't back yet, but the others came back with the strings.
When I sent Emily's first Lindsey in for a new head because her eyelids were peeling (sold this one, gave Emily the one from the Lot of Insanity), I got a call directly from the hospital representative. She felt that Lindsey had a nicer skin tone than the heads they had there, and the tone of the replacement heads didn't match Lindsey's limbs. She asked if I wanted all her vinyl replaced or just her eyes. I asked her if I'd be charged for a limb replacement, and she said she wasn't sure what her superviser would approve. I told her if they'd match her limbs for free, I wanted the entire head replaced (why not have brand new hair?), but if it wasn't covered, just do the eyes.
Lindsey came home with new eyes, her limbs tightened and hair curled & styled.
